When winter comes and we start taking calls about furnaces that aren't creating heat, most of them can be traced back to a lack of regular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace problems are not taken care of, your system could suddenly stop running and leave you and your family in the cold. Furnace Age

The average life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's smart to start furnace shopping now. Selecting a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make on the fly. Give yourself enough time to look through and weigh all of your options.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last two years of a furnace's life are when your system incurs the most breakdowns. Start adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the prior two years - a new system might be more cost effective.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any odd sounds coming from your system? Furnaces start making strange noises near the end of their lifespan. If your furnace is turning on and off frequently or blowing cool air, it's time to look at getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home all that well. Your home may start feeling stuffy and any family members with allergies may notice increased symptoms. A few other signs are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
