Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

When winter comes and we start taking calls about furnaces that aren't creating heat, most of them can be traced back to a lack of regular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace problems are not taken care of, your system could suddenly stop working and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are some warning signs you can be on the lookout for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system stops running.

Furnace Age

The normal life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's a good idea to start furnace shopping now. Selecting a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make on the fly. Give yourself enough time to look through and weigh all of your options.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they get up there in years and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been appropriately maintained. Envision the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be going towards purchasing a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last two years of a furnace's life are when your system incurs the most breakdowns. Start adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the last two years - a new system may be more cost effective.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any odd sounds coming from your system? Furnaces start making weird noises near the end of their lifespan. If your furnace is turning on and off frequently or blowing cold air, it's time to look at getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home very well. Your home could start feeling stuffy and anyone with allergies could notice more symptoms. A few other signs are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
